Below are some highlights that were shown on duel big screens at the 2008 Detroit Red Wings Alumni Banquet.
At the Detroit Red Wings Alumni President’s Ball on July 13, 2008 at the Royal Park Hotel, the Alumni honored Johnny Wilson with the original Iron Man Award presented by the Red Wings Alumni courtesy of Carhartt, Inc. Alumni President, Dennis Hextall, said, “Johnny was the Iron Man during his NHL playing days. Now, Johnny is the Iron Man and a rock for our Alumni charities.”
Wilson was known as the “Iron Man of Hockey” in the Fifties when he played eight straight seasons without missing a game from 1952-1953 to 1959-1960 (580 games)
Dennis Hextall, announced that Alex Delvecchio was named as the 2008 Humanitarian Award Winner. Dennis shared, “the Detroit Red Wings Alumni are pleased to honor a living legend and fine man, Alex Delvecchio. Alex has been an integral part of the long term success of this organization.”
Shawn Burr added, “Alex is a role model and a true professional. He is someone we look up to.” Past recipients of this prestigious award include legendary members like Ted Lindsay (2005), Dennis Hextall (2006), and Jimmy Peters (2007).
